Hagia Sophia, Istanbul, Turkey

This awe-inspiring mosque in previously known Constantinople (modern Istanbul) is an architectural treasure! It’s unique architecture has influenced the Muslim, Roman Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox worlds.  It’s name Hagia Sophia means “Holy Wisdom”  and was originally dedicated in 360 by Emperor Constantine, the founder of Constantinople.

It was destroyed twice by riots in the early ages and then in 1204 Crusaders attacked, desecrated and plundered it.  From 537 to 1453 it was the seat of the Patriarchiate of Constantinople and in 1453 it was turned into a mosque by Sultan Mehmet II.  Today it serves as a must-see museum in the incredible city of Istanbul.

I visited it once in 1996, but cannot wait to take my kids there in 3 weeks!  More to come later…!
